The Wilkinson County seat, sitting right on the Fall Line where Georgia's clay turns to sand.
Irwinton is the Wilkinson County seat, a small courthouse town east of Macon on Highway 441. It sits almost exactly on the Fall Line — the ancient shoreline where the Piedmont's red clay gives way to the sandy soil of the Coastal Plain — which is also why this county sits on top of so much kaolin.
That geology is not a trivia point when it comes to trees. Clay and sand hold roots differently, drain differently and fail differently, and around Irwinton a single property can have both. Trees in the sandier ground tend toward wide shallow root plates with less deep anchorage. Trees in the clay stay better anchored until the clay saturates, and then the whole root plate can move as a unit. Knowing which you're standing on changes how a lean gets read.

"JC and his team took down 60 or so dead and dying eastern cedar trees between 30 and 50 feet tall. They cut, hauled and cleaned up all of the trees and under-brush in one day. I have used JC before and both times the work was excellent and his fees were very reasonable. He is my tree guy!!"

Based forty-five minutes west in Macon, working Irwinton, Gordon, McIntyre, Toomsboro and the rest of Wilkinson County.
What Irwinton and Wilkinson County property owners ask us most.
It does. Sandy soil gives pines wide, shallow root plates with limited deep anchorage. Clay grips harder but saturates and then can let a whole root plate shift at once. Around Irwinton you can have both on one property, which is one of the things JC is reading when he looks at a lean.
Look at the ground, not the trunk. Soil heaving or cracking on the side opposite the lean, or a gap opening at the base, means the root plate is lifting. A long-standing lean with undisturbed ground around it is usually just how the tree grew.
