The Jones County seat, with Old Clinton just up the road and a whole lot of hardwood in between.
Gray is the Jones County seat, fifteen miles north of Macon on Highway 129. Just outside it sits Old Clinton, one of the best-preserved antebellum villages in Georgia — a handful of early-1800s houses that survived when the county seat moved and the railroad went elsewhere. The country around both is rolling Piedmont: red clay, mixed hardwood and a lot of it.
North of the Fall Line, the trees are different and so is the ground. Jones County runs to oak, hickory and sweetgum alongside the pine, on clay that holds water rather than draining it. After a long wet stretch that clay goes heavy around a root plate while the crown above is still catching wind — and on the slopes that make up much of the county, that combination produces leaners and root heave in places nobody was watching.

"JC and his crew did a great job getting the massive tree that fell during the storm. They were very helpful and worked hard to make sure myself and my neighbor were happy with the end results, and all of my property — trailers and fence — that were buried by the tree were protected while they worked. Will use JC's Tree Service again!"

What Gray and Jones County property owners ask us most.
Jones County is north of the Fall Line, so you're on Piedmont red clay with rolling terrain rather than flat Coastal Plain sand. Clay holds water instead of draining it, and a saturated root plate on a slope moves in ways it wouldn't on level ground. Leaners and root heave are more common here for that reason.
Yes, and they need a careful approach. Older structures are less forgiving of impact than modern framing, so removals near them come down in small sections with anything overhead lowered on a rope rather than dropped.
About twenty-five minutes. Jones County is close-in working ground for us, which helps on storm calls.
Yes, that's a normal part of our work in Jones County — fence lines, pasture edges, wooded lots and access.
